FRENECTOMY

WHAT IS A FRENECTOMY?

A frenectomy is a simple and safe surgical procedure that removes or modifies a small fold of tissue called a frenum—which connects parts of the mouth, such as the tongue to the floor of the mouth (tongue-tie) or the upper lip to the gums (lip-tie). When this tissue is too tight or restrictive, it can cause challenges with speaking, eating, breastfeeding, or oral development.

Frenectomies are most commonly performed on infants, children, or teens, but they can also benefit adults experiencing discomfort or speech issues caused by a restricted frenum

THE FRENECTOMY PROCEDURE

The procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and typically performed with a soft tissue laser, which offers greater comfort and faster healing:

  1. Evaluation – A thorough assessment of the frenum and surrounding tissue.
  2. Laser Release – The laser precisely removes or loosens the tissue in a matter of minutes, often with little to no bleeding.
  3. Post-Op Care – Minimal discomfort and downtime; stretching exercises may be recommended to promote healing and prevent reattachment.

BENEFITS OF A FRENECTOMY

  • Improved breastfeeding or bottle-feeding
  • Better speech clarity and articulation
  • Enhanced tongue and lip movement
  • Support for proper oral development
  • Reduced risk of dental problems later in life
