DENTAL SEALANTS

WHAT ARE DENTAL SEALANTS?

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth (molars and premolars) to help prevent cavities. These areas are more prone to decay because of the deep grooves and pits where food and bacteria can easily accumulate. Sealants act as a barrier, shielding the enamel from plaque, acid, and food particles.

Sealants are most commonly used for children and teens, but adults who are at higher risk for cavities can benefit from them as well.

THE DENTAL SEALANT PROCEDURE

Applying sealants is a quick, painless, and non-invasive process that can be completed in just one dental visit. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Cleaning the Tooth
The tooth surface is thoroughly cleaned to remove any plaque or debris.
  2. Preparing the Tooth Surface
A special gel is applied to the chewing surface to create a rough texture that helps the sealant bond to the tooth.
  3. Rinsing & Drying
After the gel is rinsed off, the tooth is dried completely.
  4. Applying the Sealant
The sealant material is carefully painted onto the tooth surface.
  5. Curing with Light
A curing light is used to harden the sealant and lock it in place.

Once set, the sealant forms a durable coating that can last for several years with proper care.

BENEFITS OF DENTAL SEALANTS

  • Cavity Prevention: Sealants protect the most cavity-prone areas of the teeth.
  • Cost-Effective: Preventing decay reduces the need for more expensive dental work in the future.
  • Painless Application: The procedure is simple and comfortable—no drilling or anesthesia required.
  • Long-Lasting Protection: Sealants can last up to 5–10 years with regular checkups and good oral hygiene.
  • Safe for Kids and Adults: While commonly applied to children's permanent molars, sealants are also beneficial for adults with deep grooves in their teeth.
